Sales of AFVs – petrol/electric, diesel/electric, pure electric cars and plug in hybrids – rocketed last year, easily out-accelerating the rest of the industry with impressive growth figures of 25 per cent against the industry average of around 7.5.

They now account for approaching two per cent – or one in every 50 new cars – leaving the showrooms.

The electric five-door hatchback is the first Volkswagen plug-in car designed for mass production, though the actual number to be built and sold remains unclear.

Ford Focus Electric goes on sale in UK

September 5th, 2013 § Comments Off on Ford Focus Electric goes on sale in UK § permalink

Ford’s first full electric passenger vehicle went on sale in the UK today, with full rollout set for 2014.
The Ford Focus Electric makes its UK debut priced from £28,500, with the £5000 Plug in Car Grant. Ford says it expects to sell just 30 vehicles in the first year in the UK, despite the conventional Ford Focus being one of the world’s top-selling cars. The initial low volume is in response to “interest from fleet customers and in support of Ford’s market-leading business sales”, Ford added. However, due to a novel “build-to-order”production system, a Ford spokeswoman said the company will be able to increase supply as required.  » Read the rest of this entry «

Volkswagen’s Electric e-Up! Pricing…

The New Volkswagen e-up!

German automaker has revealed initial pricing information for its all-electric e-Up! model, which is set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

Volkswagen’s first fully electric mass production car will have a starting price of €26,900 in Germany ($34,496/£23188 at current exchange rates), which will make it about €3,000 more expensive than a Nissan Leaf with a leased battery. Some might consider the sticker pretty hefty considering the size of the vehicle.

Whatever the case, customers that will buy the VW-badged EV will have 82 HP (60 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) at their disposal. The power will allow the small vehicle to reach a top speed of 130 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 12.4 seconds. According to Volkswagen, the e-Up! will cost each owner less than €3 ($3.85/£2.59) for every 100 kilometers (62 miles) they travel in it.
