Drivers of electric cars could use bus lanes and park for free under government plans.

Councils will be given millions of pounds in extra funding if they grant special privileges to drivers of electric vehicles, under a £500 million scheme to make drivers “feel confident” about buying them. It should be a “no-brainer” to own one, said Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister.

Every motorway service station is to have a charging point by the end of this year that can power a car for a 100-mile journey in 20 minutes. There are 500 more chargers planned in the next year.

Nick Clegg: Making Britain number one for ultra low emission vehicles

December 10th, 2013 § Comments Off on Nick Clegg: Making Britain number one for ultra low emission vehicles § permalink

Deputy Prime Minister calls on industry to help UK accelerate demand.

The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has today (7 November 2013) called for innovative ideas from key players in the automotive industry to help the UK stay ahead of global competition and secure our position as global leader in ultra low emission vehicles.

The call comes following the government’s announcement of a £500 million investment to drive a low carbon revolution.

The investment, which the government announced in June, will be used to support the growing market between 2015 and 2020 and is one of the most substantial packages of support for ultra low emissions vehicles in the world. It will be used to support electric cars and other vehicles that produce almost no carbon, creating jobs and boosting economic growth, as well as tackling climate change and air quality issues.
